These seeds were placed in a mini greenhouse box in the basement about 2 months ago. They were watered only scarcely but remained covered with a slight crack for air. These were "seed exchange" seeds from NARGS 2010. Most all of them are hard to germinate, rock garden plants that require sandy loam soil. Photos are only for reference.

Wintersweet

This is the first year I've noticed this Wintersweet blooming. It has an intensely sweet fragrance. It was here before we came, I imagine is responding to the better sun exposure it is getting after I cleaned out some trash trees from the area. (privet, cherry laurel, etc.)

task: prune it to chest height (to keep the blooms within reach) after flowering. Prune budding branches in the winter to bring indoors. Propagate from softwood cuttings in summer. (notoriously difficult to root. Add silica jell and charcoal to medium)

The germination temperature for all of the above is between 65 and 75 deg. Air temperature is between 40 and 80. Ground temperature at 2" is between 50 and 60 deg. I'll use the plants started indoors to fill the gaps in those that don't' germinate outdoors. Some like Oenothera and Linum resent transplanting, so I'm not sure if they are worth the trouble of trying to start indoors.

Sewed Callirhoe involucrata "Wine Cup", Callirhoe leiocarpa "Tall Poppy Mallow", and Phacelia tanacetifolia, "Purple Tansy". I put them mostly in the white Iris bed in the new layer of grit, some around the winter honeysuckle on the verge on Wayne St., some in the rock garden, and some along the back border. Added Sand and Grit to white iris bed and parterre. 1/2 ton granite dust, Oconee Sand and Gravel, $20, gas for Bob's truck $15.

Casting grit over the heavy mulch gives the flower seeds a moist yet well draining environment to germinate in. On the Iris bed, it's thick enough to almost obscure the heavy layer of leaves. 1/2" (this area is so wet it would benefit from better drainage) In the Parterres it's spread much lighter. ~ 1/8"

Sprayed lime sulfur today. 52deg, sunny, high 30's tonight, rain late tomorrow eve. The spray has dried already so there's no danger from freezing and the rain tomorrow shouldn't wash off too much. The filter on the sprayer is in the handle, cleaned.

Rocket Larkspur Baby Blue Eyes Perennial Lupine Sweet Alyssum

Larkspur has done very well here in the past as have the Baby Blue Eyes. The perennial Lupine and Sweet Alyssum have been sporadic performers in my garden. I'll look for replacements in the future. A good replacement for the Perinnial Lupine might be the Arroyo Lupin, although it's an annual, it tolerates our heavy soil and humidity better.

I cast the seed by hand into the beds and waste areas even on top of heavy mulch. I plan to cast sand, grit and peat over the areas with heavier mulch to increase those seeds chances.

Seeded Delphiniums / Geraniums

Started these Delphiniums Dec. 29. Covered seeds with pearlite only (1/8") for even moisture. Delphinium Culture.

Heating mat keeps 70+ temps. There are some algae issues in the pearlite.

Started these Geraniums around Dec. 10th. You can see the algae here. This rare geranium was $6 for 10 seeds, only 5 germinated.

The Black and Decker Hedge Hog needs new batteries every year. And at $40 each I decided to go for a Weed Wacker gas model at $90. It's 5lbs heavier so I only have the strength to use it about 10 minutes at a time. It's also much stronger and sharper. It takes some getting used to. It's easy to cut off alot you didn't intend. And using it on a ladder is precarious.

These poppies have bloomed twice but the flower never stay on more than a few days. This type is supposed to like more winter freeze than we get. Our 16deg week must have been good for them. I may put them in pots for next winter so they will get more chill. I hate to have to pamper more pots for something that blooms for only a week though.

This Yucca does well even in dry shade.

Astilbie is blooming. This type is fairly minature.

Fatsia Healthy in spite of water from the downspout shredding it's leaves.

I'll add aluminum sulfate to help these hydrangeas get more blue.

Oak Leaf is at it's peak.

Nandina are filling in and blooming after a sparse pruning this spring.

Hosta and impatients look good here but the hosta are to be moved to a larger spot.

The last Tiarella "foam flower" is still showing blossums. It get's the least amount of sun. So the secret to very long bloom time is reduced direct sun. This one on the left end shaded by the house in the early morning, the very next one is exposed and ends it's bloom time last month.

This autumn fern came from Lockerly. Also selected by Jim Garner as a great performer in dry periods.

The coleus is doing well. These have been a pain to keep alive since seeding in february. I'm not sure I want to do them from seed again.

So far I've persuaded Shelagh to spare this smilax for winter decoration.

The holly fern is making new fronds. This thing grows pretty slow but is evergreen.

This species Lenten Rose "Heliborus Foetida", "stinking johnny" is supposed to smell bad when it's brushed. I put it behind a tree limb to avoid contact. It's also evergreen and has an interesting contrasting leaf shape.

Hanoke grass is growing very slowly. It may need more light.

Wood Poppies keep on making blossums by ones and twos.

This ground cover came from Lockerly and was reccomended by Jim Garner. I'll have to look it's name up again. It's surviving some very deep shade.

Sweet Box is healthy. This is it's first year.

Two of the four Dusty Millers I moved here have survived. I guess that's pretty good in such deep shade.

The Foxgloves are 90% gone.

Yellow Violas are persistent but dwindling.

Late Larkspur are in their prime. Summer sweet is making buds. I pruned underneath the Forsythia.

Blue Pansies have had it by the end of may here. It protects them quite well through this point though. Just a little low direct sunlight before twilight.

The Gardenias by the porch are beginning to bloom even through all the whitefly infestations they've had. The fly are mostly gone now but the stems are covered with black soot still. The other Gardenias bloom about two weeks later than these.

Lantanna is beginning to bloom but is very shaded out by the Cannas. Cut back the Magnolia after blooming.

The larkspur looks great with the yellow contrast. You could call it the color blind bed. The Elephant Ears are volunteers. 10 years here and we've never seen them. They must have been dormant for decades.

Lobelia looks good blue with yellow as well. These will be quickly shaded out by the marigolds though.

This black eyed susan needs severe staking around the beginning of May.
